google-voice-failGoogle Voice is a magnificent service that is a pleasure to use, even though they haven’t yet learned my name. Dearest Google, I don’t want to sound like a spurned user with commitment issues, but we’ve been over this before. When I signed up? I told you then… I am Carey. It’s right there, the first five letters of my email address. It’s also in my Google Account information. Name: Carey. So please, next time my mother calls, don’t transcribe her messages as “Hi Kerry” or “Hi Carrie.” If someone is saying “hi,” there’s a good chance they might soon break out a name, and you know my name. Please use it.

Thank god people don’t leave voicemails with my last name!

Update: I am also not “Jerry.”

I’m really not sure what to do with this, but apparently it’s big over here.

Bananas.
In pajamas.

It was bound to happen eventually, but I finally used the same piece of news to generate posts for both C’ist and Consumer Reports. And it only took the President announcing a food safety crackdown as part of his weekly address. Since I cover the weekly address for Consumer Reports, I had to write about it seriously and objectively, resulting in the post: President calls for FDA reform as Republicans continue to attack the budget.

But! Since it was food safety, I also got to bat around the infamous Chinese Poison Train, resulting in the post: Obama Announces Plans To Make Food Safe For Human Consumption.

Same source, vastly different result. You can guess which one I like better.

browsersGoogle’s sprawling empire is taking up too much tab room in Firefox so I’m sequestering their services to a brand new browser, bringing my total up to five. It sounds crazy, I know. I never understood people who used more than one browser until I became a blogger. Then it all made sense, and most of it was driven by Google. I don’t want to logout of my GMail account to access C’ist’s tipline, a separate GMail account, and I don’t want the stories I’m editing sitting next to stories I’m considering for tomorrow. They need their own spaces. Here’s the current setup and what I’ve decided to do with Google… Continue Reading »

coldI’m up in Palmerston North because Stacy was down visiting Wellington with a car and it was time for a road trip. I’ve driven by Palmy, as it’s known, three times so far without any desire to go visit. There’s only one thing here: the square. That’s it. There are some nice shops and whatever surrounding the square, but otherwise, it may as well be Auckland.

Here’s the worst part: it’s 10 degrees out. That’s 50 degrees fahrenheit. It’s freezing cold! None of the houses in New Zealand have central heating, so I’m bundled up in my jacket wondering why I didn’t overpack my fleece. Big mistake. Back in New York, it’s 53 degrees. Almost time to return…
